Below is the information that you need to know to register for the 9th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure set for Friday May 31 -- Saturday June 1, 2013.
Please note that the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey has become a relatively large event. In order to have a safe and orderly event, we need for every runner and team to comply with the rules of the event. The RTO's future will be in jeopardy if people do not follow the rules. Further below we set out some of the rules. We will implement a variety of measures to make sure that everyone is aware of these rules and the possibility that a team may be disqualified if a team does not comply with the rules. Stay tuned for more information about this important topic.
Time Maximum / Pace Maximum
The maximum time to complete the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey is 33 hours. If your team will need this much time, we will be starting you at 7 a.m., the earliest start time. The pace limit is 11 minutes per mile. So your team must average an 11 minute per mile pace for the entire event.
If you are concerned that your team will not be able to complete the course in 33 hours and average an 11 minute per mile pace for the entire event, then please sign up for the RTO One, the one day version of the RTO on the last 12 legs of the course. Click here for more information.
Registration prices
The earlier you sign up, the less you have to pay to run and play in the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, and you may score some extra swag too! But note there is a cap on the number of teams so only 250 teams will be allowed in the event.
Thru October 31, 2012:
$1,320 per team ($110 per runner on a team on 12)
Between November 1, 2012 and February 28, 2013:
$1,440 per team ($120 per runner on a team of 12)
From March 1, 2013:
$1,560 per team ($130 per runner on a team of 12)
NOTE: if you register on line through Active, Active charges an extra fee.
What everyone gets for signing up:
Every runner receives a technical shirt (mens and womens sizes so please give us the correct mens or womens size when you sign up) and a race bag with goodies and of course a finisher's medal. In addition, every runner will get the opportunity to participate in a first class long distance relay event over a 178 mile spectacular course passing through two states and touring the Reno-Lake Tahoe region, filled with cool places and sights to see, with a lively start ceremony with music and introductions, a Finish Line Festival with delicious food and cold brews for sale and music and an awards ceremony, 35 exchange points, many spirited and informed volunteers, plenty of directional signs, safety signs, light plants, and highway patrolmen for your safety, and hundreds of other enthusiastic runners with creative team names and shirts shuttling about in decorated vans to share the experience with you and add to your memories.
Early registration swag:
The first 25 teams who pay the full entry fee will receive the official Reno-Tahoe Odyssey blanket. This soft and comfortable blanket will be great for multiple purposes: during the evening of the RTO when it gets a little chilly up at Tahoe; for keeping warm on other occasions like attending spring sports in Northern Nevada; and as something to sit on at a picnic or at the beach.
Captain's swag:
We will continue our tradition of providing each captain with an RTO beer glass. In addition, the captain will receive a complementary beer at the Finish Line Festival. Limited to one captain per team.
Cap on number of teams:
Two hundred fifty (250). This is another reason to sign up early to make sure that your team gets into the event.
Two ways to register:
1) On line through Active.com. Click here to connect to Active.com.
2) By mail. Click here to get the registration mail in form. Please complete it carefully and legibly so we can read it. Write a check to Race178 and mail it and the completed registration form to the RTO offices in downtown Reno at 331 E. Liberty Street, Reno, Nevada 89501.
Registration requirements:
At the time each team signs up, the team captain must provide the following information to be considered a registered team.
For each runner:
Name
Gender
DOB
City of residence
Email address
Tech shirt size (mens and womens sizes)
10K time
Number of years in the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey
For each team:
Name
Division
Estimated total time to complete the course
To increase the likelihood that you will get the right size of your Race Shirt:
Please note that only runners who are registered as of March 31, 2013 are guaranteed a race shirt in the right size. After that we will try to provide each runner with a shirt that is the right size but we cannot guarantee it. This is another reason to sign up and get us all of your information early.
Volunteer requirement for local teams:
Each team that has at least 9 runners residing within 30 miles of a point along the course needs to provide 2 volunteers.
There is an on line sign up process for volunteers. Volunteers need to use that system to sign up for their assignment.
Please have your volunteers register through the on line process by April 15, 2013.
Teams who do not provide the required volunteer info will be charged $120 per team and will be required to pay that fee by May 1, 2013. We will use those monies to obtain volunteers if necessary, to spoil the volunteers who help us put on the event, and to make additional contributions to charities.
Here are some of the most critical rules that you need to know:
- The volunteer related requirements set forth above.
- Vehicles for transporting runners along the course into the runner exchange points cannot exceed 20 feet in length. No big motor homes. No buses. No limousines.
- Runners must follow specific instructions for each leg. This includes crossing busy roads at designated intersections only and running on a particular side of the road.
- Team vehicle drivers must follow specific instructions for each leg, including parking in designated parking locations. Team vehicles may not always stop or park wherever they want to do so.
- Runners are strongly encouraged to not use headphones. Many relays strictly prohibit the use of headphones. We will allow runners to use headphones only in two sections of the course. The first part is the first six legs of the course (Leg Nos. 1 through 6). The second part is on the last three legs of the course (Legs Nos. 34 through 36). These are legs that runners will be on in the day. Most of the legs are in Reno where sidewalks or bike paths are available. Runners assume all of the risks associated with running with headphones.
- Runners may not use headphones on Legs 7 through 33. These include all legs on CA State Route 89 (Legs 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16) and all legs run in the dusk and in the night time.
- Runners are required to wear bright orange or yellow vests with reflective materials from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Runners are highly encouraged to wear these vests at all times.
- Runners are required to wear flashing lights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Runners must wear at least one flashing light on the front and one on the back.
- Runners must comply with special rules for the legs along CA State Route 89 (Legs 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16). They include the following. Runners are required to wear bright orange or yellow vests with reflective materials and runners are required to wear flashing lights regardless of whether they are running these legs in the day, dusk or night.
- Runners will comply with instructions given by race staff and exchange point volunteers to wear reflective vests and flashing lights at other designated times.
- Everyone must be quiet in designated quiet zones and otherwise respectful of property owners along the course.
- Every runner should diligently train for this running event to increase the likelihood that every runner will be able to run all of his or her legs and every team will be able to complete the event in the maximum time allowed.
- Runners will not split legs unless there is an injury or some other significant reason. If runners split a leg, then the teams must comply with the substitution procedures.
- Runners who are younger than 18 need to get approval from the race director to participate in the event. Special arrangements may need to be made about certain issues.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and your cooperation.
Course changes for 2013:
We intend to change the location of the first van exchange point (Exch. No. 6).
We are contemplating other changes. We may use a different route into Truckee for Legs 7 and 8. We may modify Leg 18 through South Lake Tahoe. We may use the original Geiger Grade / Toll Road for Leg 33.
Stay tuned for more news about course changes.
Start getting ready for a grand adventure. The 9th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure is going to be a blast!
